The Blue Connection – Circular Economy

Circular Economy Business Game

The module in brief

The circular economy offers new business opportunities – what are they and what are the associated challenges?

The Blue Connection is an innovative online business simulation game. It invites participants to transform the linear supply chain of a virtual electric bicycle manufacturer into a circular value chain. In teams of 4, participants will represent the functional roles of VP Finance, VP Purchasing, VP Supply Chain and VP Sales.

Team members will be faced with a variety of real-life, real-time dilemmas, and cross-functional understanding and collaboration are key to success.

Objectives

The circular economy offers new business opportunities

The benefits are obvious to many… Increasing economic growth* by 1 to 4% through circular strategies that involve maintenance and repair, reuse, remanufacture, refurbishment and recycling.

These strategies enable companies to:

  • Enter new markets (C2C and C2B)
    Gain market share
    Propose new/differentiating offers (services)
    Create a competitive advantage
    Use the latest technologies
Apply solutions to protect our planet and their business

…but what does this mean in practice and what are the challenges encountered during the game?

The little extras

  • Participants take on different roles (Purchasing, Supply Chain, Finance, Commerce), providing a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and interactions in a circular economy.
  • The course teaches how to develop and implement circular strategies such as reuse, remanufacturing and recycling.
  • Participants learn how to align circular business models with profitability, showing that sustainability can also be financially beneficial.
  • The game encourages collaboration and team decision-making, reinforcing group work and problem-solving skills.
  • The competitive element of the game makes learning dynamic and motivating, encouraging participants to excel in their respective roles.

About the game

Participants run their own virtual business, The Blue Connection, a manufacturer of electric bikes. Due to the growing demand for companies to transform the way they operate and the new business opportunities offered by the circular economy, the electric bike manufacturer has hired a new management team to transform the company’s linear value chain into a circular value chain. Participants will learn how to adopt a circular approach by moving from linear ‘take-make-throw’ production to a circular business model.
